How the Naturalization (N-400) Application Process Works
Applying for U.S. citizenship is a milestone. Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) allows qualified Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) to request U.S. citizenship.
1. Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Be at least 18 years of age at filing.
- Be a Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
- Demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence in the United States.
- Demonstrate good moral character.
2. Document Checklist for Form N-400
- Front and back copy of your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- State-issued ID or Driver's License
- Marriage certificate or divorce decrees (if applicable)
- Proof of tax filings for recent years
- Travel records for trips outside the U.S. lasting 6 months or longer
